I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics & Data Science at Carnegie Mellon University and an affiliated faculty member of the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. I am also a core member of the Institute for Complex Social Dynamics, housed in Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which brings together scholars at CMU who develop and apply mathematical and statistical models of social phenomena.

My research focuses on statistical methodology for the social sciences. My main methodological research interests include statistical inference for social network data (longitudinal modeling, multiplex networks, relational event models, etc.) and social science and humanities data broadly (pairwise comparisons, text data, etc.). Much of my methodological work is inspired by interdisciplinary collaborations. My applied areas of interest include education, health sciences, organizational behavior, sociology, and criminology. I work in collaboration with the Gender, Relationships, and Health Lab and am part of the Digital Vaccine Project at CMU. My research has been supported by an NSF MMS Award, a Russell Sage Foundation Small Grant, and various NIH grants, amongst others.

I coordinate the Networkshop Research Group at CMU. The group’s interests span a range of contemporary topics in statistical network analysis and various applications. We meet weekly to discuss new problems and results in the literature as well as to share our own research findings. Click here if you are interested in attending Networkshop meetings.

I currently serve on the editorial board of Statistica Neerlandica, on the CMU Open Science & Data Collaborations advisory board, and as a board member of the International Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA).

I received my Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, in 2018. Prior to that, I received a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics (2011), a research master’s degree in Behavioral and Social Sciences (2012), and undergraduate degrees in Mathematics (2008) and Pedagogical Sciences (2010).
