Case Studies in Bayesian Statistics
Workshop 9 - 2007

October 19-20
Carnegie Mellon University
Pittsburgh, PA

The Ninth Workshop on Case Studies of Bayesian Statistics took place on October 19 and 20, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. The Workshop featured in-depth presentations and discussions of substantial applications of Bayesian statistics to problems in science and technology, poster presentations of contributed papers on applied Bayesian work, and contributed presentations by young researchers. In conjunction with the workshop, the Department of Statistics' Tenth Morris H. DeGroot memorial lecture was delivered by Professor Larry Brown, University of Pennsylvania. video

The case studies selected are:
  • Bayesian Construction of Radiocarbon Calibration Curves Caitlin Buck and Paul Blackwell (University of Sheffield)
Discussants: John Haslett and Andrew Millard. video
  • Inferring Climate System Properties Using a Computer Model Bruno Sanso (University of California, Chris Forest (Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change) and Daniel Zantedeschi (University of California Santa Cruz) video
Discussants: Dave Higdon and Jonty Rougier. video

Young Researchers: Abstracts were solicited from young researchers (currently students or having completed a PhD within five years). The abstracts were to emphasize the scientific problems and how the statistical work solves the problem. These four papers were chosen:

  • Bayesian Hierarchical Spatially Correlated Functional Data Analysis Veerabhadran Balandandayuthapani, Bani K. Mallick and Raymond J. Carroll
  • Bayesian Analysis of Stochastic Computer Model Output: A Forest Simulator Response to Future Climate Change James L. Crooks
  • Spatial Trends in Ground Surface Temperature Histories using Bayesian Partition Modelling Peter Hopcroft and K. Gallagher
  • Modelling the First Expansion of Modern Humans into Europe Lynsey McColl

Posters: Abstracts are due by October 5. The organizing committee will select among them in constructing the final program. Anyone interested in submitting an abstract should look at the web page "What makes a good case study?" See a tentative list of posters here.

The Carnegie Mellon Department of Statistics, along with the organizers of the Case Studies in Bayesian Statistics Workshop 9, are pleased to announce a celebration in honor of Steve Fienberg on the occasion of his 65th birthday. video and after-dinner talk video

We will be kicking off the workshop with an introductory mixer at the Holiday Inn. Please join us between 7:00 and 10:00 Thursday evening for cocktails and light refreshments.
