  sections 8.1 and 8.3

Read Chapter 10 
  section 10.1 -- ignore proof of thm 11
  section 10.2 -- ignore proof of thm 3, i.e. ignore from lemma 9 to the rest of the section
  section 10.3  
  section 10.4 -- read lightly
  section 10.5 -- optional -- I will not cover it - I do not expect you to know it


To do:

(1) I need to figure out if I want to use the same book next year. Our book is mostly 
good but unfriendly and terse. The other books I have looked at are not as good or 
are not advanced enough. So I must decide what format to adopt:
Use a difficult book and teach simpler lectures
Use a simpler book and do more difficult material in class
If you have a thoughful opinion about this that you would feel comfortable sharing with 
me, it would be very helpful to me
