PARAGRAPHS THAT MAKE A POINT the topic/issue can be 1-3 sentences a paragraph takes shape as you read it; the thought unfolds in the paragraph the point can change depending on the context of the paragraph (spaceflight example;he stopped writing example) - context drives identificaiton of tghe point the point is either - last sentence of the pargraphs "issue" section; or - last sentence in paragraph - or last sentence of discussion if not last sentence of parag (which would then act as a coda) NARRATIVE PARAGRAPHS (should be signalled in first sentence) POINT PLACEMENT AND PARAGRAPH TYPES First paragraphs - pt is last sentence of parag (gives reader context for rest of paper) Last sentences - pt is last sentence, the climax of paper summary in teh parag (or just before coda sentence) Medial parags - usually point should be up front (last sentence of topic passage, or even earlier) ONE-SENTENCE PARAGRAPHS - needs issue/discussion/point elements POINTLESS PARAGRAPHS CONNNECTIONS BETWEEN PARAGRAPHS - pull context forward - signal forward from end of prev unit - signal back from beginning of new unit - both WHOLE DOCUMENTS
