Subject: plan for today's class From: Brian Junker Date: 1/28/2016 1:35 PM To: Sam Adhikari , Purvasha Chakravarti , Maria Cuellar Correa , Shannon Gallagher , Liangyan Gui , Amanda Luby , Francesca Matano , Brendan McVeigh , Josue Orellana Arreaga , Taylor Pospisil , Jining Qin , Lee Richardson , Yuxiong Wang , Peter Elliot , Beau Dabbs Hi all, I had occasion to edit some of the writing of Sam and Francesca, and (with their permission) I will talk about some of my edits in class, illustrating some points about structure and also about making a smooth reading experience for the reader. The nice part is they are both pretty good writers, so the issues are relatively easy to isolate and discuss. If this is successful I might continue to talk about how I would edit other classmembers' work in future classes. I will make formal assignments (probably after class) for the weekend as follows: * There are a couple of "general guideline" style articles that I would like you to read, and probably comment on. * I want each of you to think about what is the next writing task in your project. Will it be revising the section(s) based on peer reviews that you get tomorrow? Will it be working on a different section of the paper? Writing a section for the first time? Whatever it is, I will want you to (a) work on that writing task over the weekend (at least 3 pp of new writing, at least 5 or 6 pp of revised writing) (b) submit the result to me on Monday so that I can arrange for peer reviews of it next week. While you are doing that, I will be looking at the peer reviews you complete tomorrow. BTW, class may end early again today, which is fine. I'm happy to stick around and discuss, either individually or as a group, what we have been doing (or will do) in class, problems or ideas or directions in your own writing, etc. best, -BJ -- Brian Junker (412) 268 - 2718 Department of Statistics brian@stat.cmu.edu 232 Baker Hall FAX: (412) CMU-STAT Carnegie Mellon University or (412) 268-7828 Pittsburgh PA 15213 USA WWW: http://www.stat.cmu.edu/~brian/
