* Intro discussion * Discuss revised paragraph (I should do a revision myself) * Discuss papers submitted in discussion session (preview a few) * Introduce beginning, middle, end -- do some in-class survey / voting to find out what people remember from sentences. (need to collect a few examples to use for this) -- hopefully, this will reveal the "stress position" -- we now have a couple of principles: (1) The beginning of the sentence (the "topic position") serves two reader expectations: (a) what the story of the sentence is about (b) links back to familiar information (2) The end of the sentence ("stress position") (a) what the reader will remember / take away (b) leans forward into the next sentence or other bit of writing. What about the middle? What about paragraphs? * Introduce Gopen and Swan article Assignment: Should be two parts: (1) some G&S like exercise(s) -- post an intelligent question or comment about G&S (either about the article or make a connection to something else (your own writing project, someone else's, some other advice about writing. etc.) -- respond to someone's question (if someone else has already responded, you have to say something different) (2) Gear up for sharing writing -- submit your current draft. If you do not have a draft, submit a page or so summarizing the work that you will be writing about. -- nominate a journal for your project, and submit a typical paper from that journal (give it your best shot; you can change your mind later)
