INSTALLING WINBUGS IN WINDOWS VISTA
(should be similar in Windows 7)

NOTE: References to "C:\Users\brian" below should change to your user
directory in windows!

Here's what I did (your mileage may vary):

1. Download the following three files:

    WinBUGS14.exe
    WinBUGS14_immortality_key.txt
    WinBUGS14_cumulative_patch_No3_06_08_07_RELEASE.txt

   from http://www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/bugs/winbugs/contents.shtml [you
can get each one directly by prefixing the filename with
   http://www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/bugs/winbugs/]

You will also want to download a manual and three volumes of
examples from the same webpage [or using the same prefix]:

    manual14.pdf
    Vol1.pdf
    Vol2.pdf
    Vol3.pdf

2. Run WinBUGS14.exe to install the software

   (a) Do not install in C:\Program Files\WinBUGS14. Instead,
       I installed in C:\Users\brian\Program Files\WinBUGS14

[this is very important in Vista and presumably Windows 7; in XP
I think you can install in C:\Program Files\WinBUGS14]

   (b) If windows pops up a "this progam might not have installed
correctly" window, click on "this program installed correctly" to
       reassure it.

3. Go to C:\Users\brian\Program Files\WinBUGS14 and run WinBUGS14.exe
there (the actual program this time, not the installer).

   (a) Follow the directions in
       WinBUGS14_immortality_key.txt to unlock
       the software (forever).

   (b) Follow the directions in
       WinBUGS14_cumulative_patch_No3_06_08_07_RELEASE.txt to upgrade to the
       most recent version.
