Subject: Re: 36-303 Survey of CMU undergraduate prospects From: Brian Junker Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2011 14:35:36 -0500 To: erika tang CC: David Zimmerman , Je Woo Sun , Zhiyi Tang Thanks for cc'ing me. Keep me in the loop on any future emails with Ms Mancuso or others with whom you are communicating about getting this data. If this works out, your group will not have to spend effort designing survey questions and collecting and cleaning data, and indeed you will already have a model of a survey report and other parts of the project that other groups will have to come up with on their own. Therefore I will count more heavily the quality of your analyses and written and oral reports on the project -- including analyses that are different from or substantially extend what is on the website or other reports that have been made with this data already -- since you will have extra time to do a more thoughtful and thorough job. In order to stay on-track with the team project schedule for the class, it will be important to know fairly soon (say, within a week) whether the data will be available to you. If the data does not seem to be forthcoming, I will want you to switch to another project proposals, e.g. pedestrian circulation. see you in class, -BJ On 2/10/2011 12:47 PM, erika tang wrote: > Dear Ms. Mancuso, > > My group and I in 36-303 (Survey, Sampling, and Society) hope to conduct research concerning the pursuits of undergraduates of CMU once they have left the university. To do so, we would need access to data published by the Career Center such as that about last year's graduating class at http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/students_alumni/post-grad-survey/index.html. We hope to take a random sample of five years ranging from 1995 to the present in order to obtain data that is free from the job market fluctuations of any individual year. Each member of the group has completed the CITI course on the ethical treatment of survey subjects and the proper protocol when conducting a survey. We are also in the process of submitting an IRB form to our professor, Professor Brian Junker (brian@stat.cmu.edu) Could you give us access to this data or direct us to someone who regulates the release of this data? > > -- > Sincerely, > Erika Tang -- Brian Junker (412) 268 - 2718 Department of Statistics brian@stat.cmu.edu 232 Baker Hall FAX: (412) CMU-STAT Carnegie Mellon University or (412) 268-7828 Pittsburgh PA 15213 USA WWW: http://www.stat.cmu.edu/~brian/
