Tourism notes
India is gigantic and there is lots to see. It's also a long way from home, so if you're coming, it's worth it to stay a few extra days/weeks. Here are some tips for Tamil Nadu (the state in which Chennai lies). Both the new Tamil name and old English name are mentioned for cities (Tamil/English).
Tamil Nadu itself has a rich history, food, dance (Bharatnatyam), music (Carnatic), language (Tamil), etc. stemming back thousands of years.
The BIRS venue is itself on the outskirts of Chennai. If you want to really check out the city of Chennai, then stay back for the weekend before/after, there is stuff to do and see, but mostly plenty to eat. The Marina Beach in Chennai/Madras is the second longest urban beach in the world, well worth a visit. There are absolutely fantastic restaurants in Chennai. There are great markets, bookstores, malls, and so on.
Outside Chennai, nearby highlights include the shore temples of Mamallapuram/Mahabalipuram (UNESCO world heritage site). Other regional spots include the French settlement of Puducherry/Pondicherry and the experimental township of Auroville. Some nearby cities that are culturally interesting include Thanjavur/Tanjore and Madurai.
The neighboring state of Kerala is extremely beautiful, clean and unique in its own history, art, culture, language, etc. Other common destinations in India include the beach state of Goa, the Leh-Ladakh valley in Kashmir, the 8 kilometer high peaks in the Himalayas, the desert palaces of Rajasthan, the historical city of New Delhi (including a long day trip to the Taj Mahal), the Ajanta-Ellora cave paintings, and so on. They're all far away from each other, so maybe pick one or two and explore well.
