Overview of Internet Searching Techniques

Here are my suggestions for approaching the problem of finding specific information on the internet:

• Learn at least a little bit about the organization and workings of the internet. Two sources are My Background Material and W3C.

• Spend some time every week looking around the internet to familiarize yourself with various web sites.

• Before each search think about who might have cause to enter onto a web page the information in which you are interested.

• Use the Search Table on my home page. It is organized by the four types of searches:
  • Guess a URL (web site address, aka Universal Resource Locator)
  • Use a list of interesting web sites
  • Use a categorized search service
  • Do a word or phrase search

  For each of these search types, my Search Table has

  • An annotated Links list of sites that fall in that search type
  • An Explanation of the uses of that search type
  • Examples of uses of that search type
  • A Quiz in the form of practice search problems
