The department’s annual 7-week Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Statistics concluded on July 21 with a poster session featuring students’ research, and to which the entire department and others were invited. Among this year’s attendees was Carnegie Mellon’s chief academic officer, Provost Farnam Jahanian.

The program provides participants with hands-on experience working with real data, on real problems, in a stimulating, collaborative, and supportive environment. It is open to any undergraduates who are U.S. citizens entering their junior or senior year in Fall 2016, and who have an interest in learning about modern approaches to statistical inference in data-rich fields of application.

This year’s research topics included astrostatistics, flu trends, shoeprints, and bullets.
